Following today\u2019s vote in parliament on a new legislation that bans the legal recognition of transgender and intersex people in Hungary, Amnesty International\u2019s Researcher, Krisztina Tam\u00e1s-S\u00e1r\u00f3y said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis decision pushes Hungary back towards the dark ages and tramples the rights of transgender and intersex people. \u201cIt is critical for Hungary\u2019s Commissioner for Fundamental Rights to act urgently and request that the Constitutional Court review and swiftly annuls the appalling provisions of this law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEveryone\u2019s gender identity should be legally recognised and everyone must be allowed to change their legal name and gender markers on all official documents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This law is the latest step to curtail transgender and intersex people\u2019s rights. The bill has received widespread criticism both domestically and internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The law requires the recording of individuals\u2019 sex by birth in the national registry of birth, marriages and deaths, which cannot later be changed. This means that individuals\u2019 identification documents would contain the same, unchangeable information, restricting transgender and intersex people from registering their names and obtaining associated documents in accordance to their gender identity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
